Baileigh MPS-5 — 3/16" Throatless Shear

  • 3/16" mild-steel capacity — handles 7-gauge material, the working end of what most shops cut by hand.
  • 5.25" curved blade — full-length cuts through panels in a single pass; the curve clears curls and tight radii without binding.
  • Throatless design — base guides waste away from the blade so you can cut large panels and intricate shapes without trimming.
  • Cast-iron body — single-piece casting holds the blade geometry true over years of use.
  • 62 lb bench unit — mounts to a sturdy bench; one person can move it between stations.
  • Manual operation — no power, no air, no setup beyond bolting it down.
  • 1-year parts warranty — backed by Baileigh's US support team and lifetime phone tech support.

Baileigh MPS-5 Throatless Shear — 3/16" Mild-Steel Capacity in a 62 lb Bench Unit

The MPS-5 is a manual throatless shear built around a single-piece cast-iron body and a 5.25" curved blade. Throatless means there's no fixed C-frame in the way of the work — the base guides the cut waste off to the side, so you can swing a full panel through the blade or follow a curve without stopping to trim.

The 3/16" mild-steel capacity is what most one-off and small-batch sheet metal work calls for. Patch panels, brackets, exhaust shields, gussets, hand-shaped door skins — material in the 16-gauge to 7-gauge range cuts cleanly with the curved blade and doesn't need a second pass. For shops moving up from a 16-gauge entry shear, this is the spec that opens up the heavier work.

The cast-iron body weighs in at 62 lb. It bolts to a sturdy bench, takes its bite from operator leverage rather than a flywheel or motor, and stays put while you cut. No power, no air, no setup beyond mounting it down. Backed by Baileigh's 1-year parts warranty and lifetime phone tech support out of their Wisconsin office.

For lighter work, the MPS-2 handles 10-gauge mild steel in a 36 lb bench unit at a lower price point. A natural companion to a shrinker stretcher and an English wheel — rough-cut on the MPS-5, then shape and finish on the wheel and shrinker. The full category is at Throatless Shears.
