The Spring Tools 28R45-1 High Speed Steel Center Punch is a hammerless design that differs from other automatic center punches in that the user can control the impact force making it perfect for transferring patterns and templates to sheet metal.

Unlike other automatic punches, the patented Spring Tools design incorporates a spring into the body of the punch that the user can stretch by hand to the desired length before releasing, giving the user complete control over how much impact force is delivered to the pointy end hence full control over the marking depth, allowing you to get just the right amount of force to leave the smallest visible marking on your sheet metal without going too deep or leaving a dent on the reverse side - even on thin sheet metal like 20ga and thinner. 

This ability to control the impact force and imprint depth makes the tool perfect for transferring patterns from paper / card to sheet metal - simply lay your pattern or template over the top of the sheet metal, secure it with some of our patterning magnets to ensure the pattern does not move, and then trace your template lines with the center punch, pulling back on the top of the punch to "charge" the spring and then release, leaving a small indentation through the template onto your sheet metal which can then be viewed and traced with a marker to develop the full pattern on your sheet metal.

The Spring Tools 28R45-1 High Speed Steel center punch has a hardened high speed steel tip that can be sharpened without losing its hardness, allowing you sharpen the tip to your desired point profile and re-sharpen for many years to come. The hardened tip also ensures you can mark and material from soft brass and copper to cold rolled mild steel and harder materials like chrome-moly sheet and harder.

Whether you are bead rolling, shaping panels, cutting or bending, this is a simple and cheap way to get your patterns onto the sheet metal.
